Leon Edwards was able to record a huge win for his welterweight title ambitions, beating Gunnar Nelson on the cards in a composed performance.
It really was just a case of a lack of intensity being the issue on Nelson’s side. Edwards turned in a fantastic display in each facet of the fight but the corner of his opponent will no doubt be frustrated with the relative lack of offensive activity on the feet.
The first round seemed to be going to plan for Mjolnir MMA standout after he was able to get the fight to the mat and advance position.
The Englishman who shared the cage with him fought back incredibly well as the round went on though, showing his own clear improvement in the grappling department.
A huge elbow caused some serious damage to the Icelandic fighter as he hit the canvas late in the second, almost succumbing to a ground-and-pound finish before the round came to a close.
In the third, it was more of the same on the feet before Gunnar was able to finally secure a takedown followed by a dominant position on the mat – taking mount but left with little time to work before the final buzzer sounded.
Edwards moves to seven straight wins with the win and directly after the bout’s conclusion, he made it known that he wanted #6-ranked Ben Askren next time around.
For Nelson, it’s well and truly back to the drawing board as he suffers his fourth UFC defeat since signing in 2012.
