Khabib Nurmagomedov moved to 28-0 with a near-perfect performance in the UFC 242 main-event, besting Dustin Poirier to retain the 155lb title.
Khabib Nurmagomedov second outing as champion of the UFC lightweight division saw him take on the surging contender Dustin Poirier in the UFC 242 main-event – a night that was filled from top-to-bottom with both his gym-mates and fellow Russians.
As the fighters made their walkouts, the buzz from the arena – for Khabib, in particular – really started to hammer home the fact that we were about to see something special, a true marquee matchup on a special night for the sport.
If there were any questions about how the champion was going to look after a year on the sidelines, his opening round mauling of The Diamond put all of those fears to bed instantly.
After a tentative opening minute or so, Khabib forced the takedown and went to work – winning the round by a very comfortable margin – displaying all of his patented grappling dominance to its fullest.
The second stanza opened with an explosive exchange that seemed to affect both men – with Nurmagomedov being forced to retreat after absorbing the harder shots of the two but as the round went on, he managed to regain control.
The submission then came in the third-round after Khabib scored the takedown – leading Dustin to attempt the gullotine before Nurmagomedov shrugged it off, took the back and locked up the rear-naked choke for the finish.
