Khabib On Retirement: “I Don’t Have A Lot Of Fights Ahead”

Khabib Nurmagomedov took a moment during a recent conference call to give his thoughts on his eventual retirement from the sport.

At 27-0, Nurmagomedov holds one of the most impressive records in the sport and in the time since his fourth-round submission victory over Conor McGregor – his status as one of the UFC’s biggest global superstars has been solidified.

At UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi, we will well and truly get some indication of how large a draw this man is – with the event’s location in relatively close proximity to his Dagestan home.

It truly does seem as though the UFC lightweight champion is ready to explode and yet, it doesn’t appear as though he is willing to hang around for too much longer.

Speaking on a recent conference call (via MMAJunkie), Nurmagomedov explained how his time in the fight game will eventually reach its conclusion – perhaps even sooner than most would have expected.

“Good question. Not yet, but I’m not a young fighter. I’ve already been champion for years. I’ve already defended my title. This is my second defense. Of course, I don’t have a lot of fights ahead, because I don’t want to fight when I’m 40 years old. This isn’t my plan. We’ll see.

“Before I make a decision, I have to talk with my father, I have to talk with coach Javier [Mendez], all my brothers, Dominance MMA and all the people around me. I can’t make this decision alone. But right now, I’m focused on competition, because I have too much fire inside me.”

As things stand, Nurmagomedov’s second title-defense will see him take on the surging contender Dustin Poirier but with the notion of seeing him take on his fellow lightweight great, Tony Ferguson, and the constant speculation linking him to rematch against Conor McGregor – the fights he does take between now and his eventual retirement should be nothing less than unmissable.
