Khabib Nurmagomedov wasn’t exactly certain how many rounds it would take but he still promised the world that he will destroy Conor McGregor when they finally meet.
It has been a long time in the pipeline but now, it does appear as though we are in the early stages of getting a fight between lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor together.
Things could have played out very differently for both men had McGregor not involved himself in the now infamous skirmish that occurred during UFC 223’s fight-week but with that now well and truly in the past and Conor’s legal issues slowly being resolved, do not be surprised to see some serious movement towards getting it signed and sealed in the coming weeks.
Khabib doesn’t appear to be overly phased by any of this. The champ has been basking in the glory of his UFC 223 victory for the last month or two after what had been a truly turbulent few years in his rise. Now, though, with his red-panty night awaiting him – he has become more active in the media and with his latest interview, he has made his most direct comment to date.
Speaking to sport24.ru, Khabib made it clear that McGregor would be the ideal candidate for his first title defence and although he wouldn’t give an exact round, he voiced his belief that he will run through him in emphatic fashion.
”I do not yet know who my opponent will be. The fight will likely take place in Las Vegas. I want to fight McGregor; the fans are also waiting for this fight. I hope that Conor wants this fight. He talked a lot but for some reason, as soon as it came down to real negotiations about the fight, he fell silent.
“In what round will I be able to knock McGregor out? I do not know, and no one can know this. But I’m going to destroy him.”
Sometimes it doesn’t need to be in writing for it to feel a certain way and as we move further into the summer’s latter half, it really does feel as though something special is brewing away.
