Khabib Nurmagomedov has issued a response to his great rival Tony Ferguson’s impressive interim title win over Kevin Lee at the weekend.
The rivalry that exists between the UFC’s newly-crowned interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson and the undefeated Nurmagomedov is one of the more frustrating pairings we’ve seen in recent MMA memory.
On three separate occasions ‘El Cucuy’ has been scheduled to face the Dagestani native but each time, circumstances – whether that be injury or illness – have caused the fight to be scrapped before taking place.
It truly is still one of the most interesting contests the UFC can make at any weight class right now on paper, but following Tony Ferguson’s impressive interim title win over Kevin Lee last night, Khabib should know that with us now coming up on a year since he defeated Michael Johnson at UFC 205, the fans will need to see more from him before he gets the nod for what will be a fourth time.
Khabib took to his official Twitter account to congratulate the victorious former Ultimate Fighter winner and was nothing short of respectful in his appreciation of the American’s efforts.
Of course, the most logical next fight for the interim champ Ferguson is a pairing with undisputed champ Conor McGregor, but in truth, it’s hard to know exactly what the Irishman’s next fight will be.
Khabib recently made it clear that he hopes to make a return to the octagon this December to face Ferguson (or whoever won the belt) and with McGregor apparently out of action for the rest of the year, would a interim-title defence from Ferguson really be that surprising?
