The UFC lightweight champion has questioned the idea that he should grant Conor McGregor a rematch after dominating him at UFC 229.
And while McGregor had a few good moments, for the most part, it was well and truly the Khabib-show from start-to-finish.
Never did the Russian look like he was in any trouble – despite the famed power that his opponent brings to the table and when the fight-ending submission came, not for a second did it look as though it could be prevented.
And while the post-fight skirmish ensured that a rematch between these two would perhaps even surpass the record-breaking PPV numbers the first outing brought in, it doesn’t really seem at this point that there is any competitive need for one – something that the UFC lightweight champion agrees with for the most part.
Speaking to Nine News Sydney in a recent interview, Khabib questioned the notion that the Irishman should be granted a rematch.
“We’ll see. He didn’t deserve this.
“Rematch for what? Before the last fight, he talk too.
“But when we go to the inside of the cage, he just, he don’t do nothing.”
The idea of a showdown between Khabib and top-contender Tony Ferguson seems to be the most popular suggestion at this point – despite the four failed attempts to schedule the bout in the past.
As for McGregor, the general consensus among the fans is that he needs to re-establish himself in the win-column before getting back in there with ‘The Eagle’ and with potential opponents like Nate Diaz, Dustin Poirier, and even UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway to choose from, one would expect that we’ll see him back in action again this year.
