Jorge Masvidal and Ben Askren are reportedly being looked at for the UFC 239 main-card, an event that is scheduled to take place on July 6.
UFC 239 is set for a spot on the annual International Fight Week and as of right now, features headlining showdowns between Jon Jones and Thiago Santos for the light-heavyweight belt and Amanda Nunes and Holly Holm for the women’s bantamweight belt.
For a while, it really did look as though the promotion would have their way and book a rematch between Askren and his UFC 235 opponent Robbie Lawler.
Their first fight ended under somewhat controversial circumstances as the famed wrestler caught his opponent in a bulldog choke – leading to the now infamous stoppage from referee Herb Dean that has been almost unanimously considered to have been early.
And while it seemed as though Dana and co. were set on running the contest back as soon as possible, it does appear as though UFC London headliner Jorge Masvidal’s knockout win over Darren Till was enough to sway their thoughts.
According to MMAFighting, this 170lb grudge-match is now being looked at for July 6, a fight that will no doubt establish one of these guys within the upper regions of the divisional title-picture.
Ben took to his official Twitter account to congratulate Jorge on what we’re assuming was accepting the fight.
I’m glad Jorge found his courage.
