Johnny Walker Lays Out Road To Eventual Shot At Jon Jones

Johnny Walker believes he is one big win away from establishing himself as the top contender to Jon Jones’ light-heavyweight title.

It does look as though Walker is on the verge of making a serious breakthrough to superstardom.

His personality, his charisma, and above all else, his penchant for the spectacular finish have all allowed him to capture the imagination of the MMA community in recent months.

For years, the people have been clamouring to figure out exactly who will be able to give Jon Jones the challenge necessary to finally dethrone him and yet, we are now over a decade into his UFC run still we are left without an answer to the ever-improving puzzle he represents.

Speaking to The Body Lock MMA, Johnny Walker explained how his focus remains on his eventual crack at the champion – a fight he believes himself to be within touching distance of.

“Only Jon Jones [is who I have an eye on]. I grew up watching this guy. I played with him in the UFC game and it [would] make me very happy to fight against him.

“I would beat him. [But] I want to enjoy the fight. I hope I don’t finish the fight very quickly because I want to enjoy the fight, enjoy the moment. Because this is my dream coming true.”

Alexander Gustafsson and Anthony Smith have both suffered dominant losses at the hands of Jones within the last six months and while they are set to face off against each other in what appears to be a top contender battle on June 1, an immediate crack at Jon would remain quite unlikely for the winner – no matter how impressively they can get the job done.

Walker, while sceptical of Gustafsson after another brutal defeat, made it clear that he wants to fight the winner – no matter who it is.

“I have no idea [who wins that fight] because Gustafsson is not the same fighter as before. I don’t know, last fight against Jon Jones, maybe he didn’t feel good, something happened, but you never know.

“Smith? Smith is good but he’s not good enough. He doesn’t finish fights, I don’t know if he has the power to finish fights. I hope Gustafsson wins, maybe a fight against him after this.”

Jones will have his hands full with the powerhouse Thiago Santos in the UFC 239 main-event in July but even with the allure of a move to the heavyweight division on the cards, one would have to assume that Jon will eventually cross paths with Walker if he can continue to string together victories.
