John Kavanagh Would Love To See Conor McGregor Vs. Frankie Edgar

John Kavanagh has spoken about his desire to see a matchup between his fighter Conor McGregor and the perennial featherweight/lightweight contender, Frankie Edgar.

And it’s a fight that has been in discussion in one way or another for the last four or five years.

Edgar, whose most recent outing saw him lose to Max Holloway, has been hanging around the top-5 of the featherweight division ever since dropping down from 155lb and in many peoples’ eyes, was the one top 145 fighter that McGregor failed to defeat before leaving the weight-class behind him.

Speaking in a recent interview with TheMacLife (via MMAJunkie), Coach John Kavanagh gave his take on the future of his star-pupil, singling out the legend Frankie Edgar as an opponent that he would like to see Conor stepping in there with.

Giving credit to The Answer as a tricky opponent, Kavanagh went on to explain his thoughts on a matchup against the former lightweight champion.

“I think him and Frankie Edgar would be a great fight. I think it was in the works when Conor was kind of going on that featherweight tear. He’s an ex-world champion, great fighter.

“Yeah, if it was me, I would love to see the Frankie Edgar fight this year, if possible. And then go on another run in 2020.”

“Frankie has a style that’s very difficult to deal with. You’ve got to train very hard for it. But it’s also one we’re somewhat familiar with, even from his first fight with [Marcus] Brimage.

“This small, fast guy, quick hands, wrestling. But Frankie’s just been in there with everybody, [he’s a] world champion, he’s beaten legends like B.J. Penn, and so on. I just think that’s a great match for the fans. And for me, I’d love to see it.”

It’s not exactly a matchup that would set the world alight but at this point in his career, I think it’s fair to say that Conor McGregor needs a win.

Sure a matchup against guy who could likely make the 135lb bantamweight limit in the near future may turn some people off but who knows, perhaps this will be the first seed in what may eventually blossom into another big-fight build-up.
