Jorge Masvidal Offers To Replace Gunnar Nelson In UFC Liverpool Matchup

One of the most electric competitors at 170lbs right now, Jorge Masvidal, has agreed to step up and face Neil Magny at UFC Liverpool next month.

Fighter nicknames, in the vast majority of cases, are used to fill the otherwise awkward little gap between first and surname and if you’re lucky, they might have just a tiny bit of relevance to the man or woman who owns them.

For every ‘Bulldog’, ‘Pitbull’, or ‘Punisher’ you have a guy like ‘Jacare’ Souza – with his alligator-like submissions or even a ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler, a man who truly comes alive in the heat of battle.

Jorge ‘Gamebred Fighter’ Masvidal didn’t exactly craft his nickname to allow it to roll off the tongue particularly well but time and time again he has proven that he is one of the most game fighters around and a truly violent customer on his day.

Following on from a three-fight win-streak that saw him defeat and finish both Donald Cerrone and Jake Ellenberger, Masvidal has lost out to both Demian Maia and Stephen Thompson in the time since but despite this, he has certainly established himself within the division’s top-10.

UFC Liverpool’s eagerly anticipated welterweight clash between Gunnar Nelson and Neil Magny fell apart in recent times after the SBG man Nelson was forced to withdraw due to a knee-injury but according to a report made by MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani, Masvidal has made it clear that he would be willing to meet Magny at a catchweight of 180lbs, should he accept the fight.

Magny apparently seemed a-ok with that.

It might not be the matchup with its roots in the local MMA circuit that we had hoped for it but a catchweight bout between Jorge Masvidal and Neil Magny could well be a fantastic one. As for Gunni, another unfortunate setback will be tough, indeed, but with plenty of time left in the calendar year, all we can do is hope that he regains fitness in time to fight before 2019 comes around.
