SBG Ireland’s grappling wizard Gunnar Nelson has reportedly been handed a tall-task for May’s UFC event in the Echo Arena as he looks to bounce back from his most recent defeat.
The story of the Icelandic-born Gunnar Nelson’s run in the UFC has been a mixed bag of successes. Losses to Demian Maia, Rick Story and a controversial stoppage at the hands of Santiago Ponzinnibio have certainly halted the momentum but with such a proven skillset, many are still expecting Gunnar to make a mark on the top-10 of the welterweight division before all is said and done.
Now, by the looks of things, he has given another opportunity to make a statement.
With the UFC confirmed to make a stop in Liverpool’s Echo Arena in May, Nelson has reportedly been signed to a bout with the veteran Neil Magny, a man who is fresh off of a UFC 219 victory over the returning Carlos Condit.
Like Gunnar, Magny has seen his own form go up and down so far in his UFC career but has consistently given his opponents trouble over the years with his lengthy frame and ridiculous cardio.
According to a report made by Farah Hannoun (via Bloody Elbow), both men have been pegged for the May 27 show and while we may not see a potential title challenger emerge from this fight, Magny and Nelson can put themselves in a perfect position to have a crack at a top-5 opponent if they manage to pull off the win in impressive fashion.

For the Irish contingent in attendance on the night, a win for Nelson would give SBG Ireland a much-needed boost as we move into the summer months.
