Gunnar Nelson has recently spoken about the possibility of a showdown with the former Bellator and ONE Championship welterweight king Ben Askren.
Nelson’s last outing saw him turn in a pretty underwhelming effort against streaking contender Leon Edwards in a fight that saw his lack of versatility and aggression prove to be the difference at UFC London.
Now, with a matchup against Thiago Alves set for UFC on ESPN+ 18 on September 28, Gunni has sized himself up against the superstar Ben Askren.
Speaking during a recent appearance on MMAFighting’s Eurobash podcast, Nelson expressed his interest in the fight while offering his thoughts on the UFC 235 debut of the former Olympian.
“I think he was probably a bit lucky in that fight against Robbie Lawler, I think you’d probably agree with that.
“He got caught with some sh*t and then he got that choke that wasn’t really on. The referee thought Robbie was out, but he wasn’t. I think he got an easy out there. It did not look good when stood up after a few from Robbie. I don’t know, he looks quite slow.”
“I think it would be a very exciting matchup. I’d love to fight Askren at some point.
Of course, Gunnar is known as one of the finest submission artists in the welterweight division, a fighter of surgical precision on the top who can slice through and submit even the hardiest of veterans.
Askren is no doubt still one of the best wrestlers to ever compete in MMA and while he wasn’t exactly impressed with his promotional debut, Nelson still gives props to Funky where due.
“He’s a good grappler and he has his own style. I think it would be interesting. He’s done really well, but his striking definitely needs some brushing up. In the grappling department he’s good; he’s good at keeping guys down, beating on them and wearing them out.
“I don’t think he has my submission skills, but he’s obviously decorated in wrestling. I’ve never competed in wrestling so he’d be really good in that area. It could be very interesting.”
