Frankie Edgar has released a statement confirming his intention to make his bantamweight debut next time he makes the walk to the octagon.
Yesterday, we brought you the news that Frankie would finally be testing the 135lb waters, with a debut in the division to come in his next outing.
It was a move that met with near-unanimous approval, given the future UFC Hall Of Famer’s constant position as the smaller man inside the octagon since the beginning of his UFC run.
Size matters, and in his recent setbacks against Max Holloway and Brian Ortega, where length and reach held him back in one, the gulf in physical power was the difference in the other.
Taking to his official Instagram, Edgar gave a short statement on the move, voicing his excitement about the new challenge after a career that has seen him achieve perhaps his highest highs at 155lbs.
When the prospect of a drop to 135lbs was first mentioned, we compiled a list of reasons why the former lightweight champion would be perfectly suited for the division, a list that can be read here.
As for the identity of his first opponent, it’s anyone’s guess.
There have been some minor whispers of a showdown between The Answer and the returning legend Urijah Faber – a fight that would serve as a rematch of their first meeting back in 2015.
Edgar was victorious that time around by way of decision and now, with Faber officially re-established as a top-15 bantamweight after his first-round TKO of Ricky Simon, perhaps the time is right to run that one back.
