Dustin Poirier has vowed to reclimb the 155lb mountain and avenge his brutal and one-sided UFC 242 defeat to Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Poirier certainly gave it a go and in fairness to him, he did better than most.
He briefly had two great moments, of course, one in the second round and another in the third but overall, it was the display of complete and utter grappling excellence from the champ.
If there were any questions about how the champion was going to look after a year out, his first-round mauling of The Diamond put all of those fears to bed and from then on, it was business as usual for the most part whenever the fight hit the mat.
Speaking to Ariel Helwani on a recent edition of his ESPN chat-show, Poirier promised the world that he will be back – maintaining that he can still defeat the champion Nurmagomedov.
“He is a special individual, but I can beat him. I just let myself down that night and it sucks.”
“I promise you I am going to rise again and I am going to get my hand raised, beat who I have to beat and I will be back. I’ll be knocking on that door again, I just hate to have to dust myself off over and over again, but this is my story.”
“This is my path. I don’t try to look for an explanation as to why this happened. I know I am one of the best in the world, and when it all does finally come together, It is going to be beautiful and it’s my story.
“It’s a love and hate relationship. Sometimes I love this so much and sometimes I hate it. It’s something that keeps breaking your heart but you keep going back to it. I can’t stop and I will not stop. I know have greatness in me, and I just have to show the world, keep rising.”
Right now, there does seem to be at least some buzz generating around a potential matchup between Poirier and the former champion of both the featherweight and lightweight division, Conor McGregor, and with both men coming off of a loss to the sitting champion, if each man is willing, it could well be the perfect fight.
