Donald Cerrone Breaks Down ‘Unorthodox’ Tony Ferguson

Donald Cerrone has given his take on his UFC 238 opponent Tony Ferguson ahead of their top contender showdown next month.

In many ways, it was a fight that caught the MMA community off guard, one that – despite being an incredibly intriguing showdown on paper – came as something of a shock given that Cowboy went to war with Al Iaquinta at UFC Ottawa as recently as he did.

Tony Ferguson has been seen by most as a stylistic nightmare for Cerrone, a guy who will test each of the well-known shortcomings in his game from the first bell to the last.

Speaking in a recent interview with MMAJunkie, Cerrone broke down El Cucuy – citing his showdown with his friend and training partner Lando Vannata as a reference point.

“I watched him fight Lando [Vannata], my buddy. I know what kind of opponent I’m against.

“He’s tough as ****, he’s very unorthodox, but not a very high-level striker, I don’t think.

“He’s just high volume. We’ll be all right.”

A win over Ferguson would no doubt rank as one of the biggest victories of Cerrone’s career to date – one that would certainly put him in line for a shot at the champion.

“I don’t even think UFC needs to say that, because this would be it. There would be nobody else. I beat Tony; I get the title. There’s no one else in line.”

Cerrone has yet to capture a UFC title despite fighting for the strap once in the past – losing out to the former champion Rafael dos Anjos by way of the first-round TKO back in 2015.

Beating a fighter of Ferguson’s quality would not only stand as one of the biggest upsets of 2019, but also – as he said – it would also make an undisputable statement about his position as the top contender in the division.

Whether it will be Nurmagomedov or Dustin Poirier who holds the 155lb belt by the time the year is through remains to be seen.
