Dillon Danis spoke to Ariel Helwani on a recent edition of his MMA Show and made one of his boldest claims to date.
Ok. At this stage, we all know exactly what to expect from Dillon Danis.
His rise into the public eye has seen him relentlessly make outlandish statements through the medium of Twitter or his interviews and while it’s important to take everything he says with a pinch of salt, sometimes you just have to stop and listen.
Not for anything more than entertainment value, I might add.
Danis is actually a phenomenally talented grappler who recently picked up his first pro-MMA win in what was one of the year’s most eagerly-anticipated debuts.
Now, with him edging towards a second outing, he joined ESPN’s Ariel Helwani on the most recent edition of Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show and gave his take on his teammate Conor McGregor’s upcoming matchup against the dominant UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.
What happened next was a true Danis-moment, if ever I saw one.
“Conor could beat Khabib in a grappling match. I think if you put them in a grappling match – like ADCC – I think people would be surprised.
“Conor is a special athlete. The way he moves his body. He has the ability to move in certain ways and make passes and stuff. He’s a really good athlete.
“Chad Mendes is a better wrestler than Khabib. What credentials does Khabib have in wrestling? Maybe in sambo. Chad Mendes was second in NCAA.”
As for his prediction, he believes McGregor’s skills on the feet will be too much for ‘The Eagle’.
“Michael Johnson caught Khabib. Michael Johnson is not at the level that Conor is.”
