Dana White: “Weili Zhang Just Became A Huge Star”

UFC president Dana White has given praise to the newly-crowned champion of the strawweight division Weili Zhang – citing her as a huge star.

It truly was a star-making performance from Magnum – one that saw her annihilate the betting favourite Jessica Andrade in under a minute to clinch the 115lb title.

Taking to her official Instagram, the former UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey sent a message of support to Zhang – commending her on her incredible victory.

Speaking post-fight, Dana White drew attention to the message sent from the former women’s bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey to the first Chinese champion in the history of the UFC.

“I don’t know if you saw this week but Ronda Rousey posted on Instagram message to Weili and Jessica this weekend. The fight that happened tonight, the UFC is a global sport, so tonight Weili Zhang’s performance was so good and so big that people were watching this fight in Canada, United States, Brazil, and the Middle East.”

“Weili Zhang became a huge star tonight. Globally, not just here in China. Obviously the first ever Chinese world champion. She’s still very fresh and young in her career. We’ll see what is in store for her, but she’s off to a good start.”

On the subject of the former-champion Rose Namajunas – Dana explained that she is still approaching her fighting future with a degree of uncertainty and will likely be taking some time off before deciding on what to do next.

“I don’t know if they’re all taking time off right now. Rose (Namajunas) is definitely taking time off. Rose got slammed on her head and wanted to take some time off after that, which is understandable. The other girls are all fighting, there’s other fights happening right now and as they play out it will determine what’s next for Weili.

“Weili told me tonight that she wants to fight as much as possible, which I love. And I can tell you this going into this fight with Jessica Andrade, nobody wanted to fight Weili Zhang. Nobody wanted to fight her. Now she’s the champion, so if you want a shot at that belt, you have to fight her.”
