Dana White has admitted that even he is having fun watching the UFC’s newest star Ben Askren finally make his mark on the world’s biggest MMA promotion.
Speaking to YahooSport, the UFC president explained how Askren’s time in the UFC has been fun – something that is perhaps contrary to the expectation many had for his opinion of ‘Funky’ beforehand.
“Askren has been fun.
“This guy’s smart, he’s funny, he likes to mix it up with everybody in a fun way, too. So it’s been good. I’m glad he’s here.
“Timing is everything in life and this was the perfect time for Ben Askren to be in the UFC.”
As for what happens next in the career of the famed wrestler, White said he is certainly pushing for a rematch of Ben’s UFC debut against Robbie Lawler at UFC 235.
Of course, the fight ended under controversial circumstances – although we pretty much laid everything out on the table here – but now, it appears as though Dana wants to run it back.
“I’m trying to make the Lawler rematch.
“First of all, that fight was awesome, it was fun, it was controversial but it’s the fight to make right now. It’s terrible when that [controversy] happens.
“That’s the fight we want to make.”
Askren has been a revelation since signing for the world’s premier mixed martial arts promotion – an unavoidable voice in a sea of prospective stars.
For now, his bid to take on the winner of the UFC London headliner between Darren Till and Jorge Masvidal seems to have been hijacked by welterweight Leon Edwards – who, of course, had a backstage altercation with Masvidal post-fight.
Whatever happens next, though, Askren is definitely the UFC’s most recognizable one-fight veterans and slowly becoming one of their loudest voices.
