Cian Cowley picked up a split decision loss at the hands of John Brewin in the BRAVE CF 22 co-main event, moving to 2-2 as a professional.
The leg-kicks of the muay-thai fighter Cowley were the story of round 1, as Brewin well and truly found himself playing the Irishman’s game. Overall, the SBG lightweight looked sharp, composed, and lethal as he stalked his man, beating his lead-leg down with each shot.
We’re all quite aware of Cian’s prowess in particular for the calf-kick and while he threw punches sparingly, he was able to maintain a solid level of pressure as he went to work.
In the second, Brewin was able to control the fight to a greater extent in the clinch – again, Cian was able to land hard shots on the feet but all in all, the time spent up against the fence was enough to swing the round in the favour of ‘Trouble’.
The third round was more or less all fought in the grappling department as Brewin used a solid mix of control and striking in the clinch to burn time off of the clock and seal the round in comfortable fashion.
The judges saw it 29-28 for Brewin, 29-28 for Cowley, and an admittedly baffling 30-27 for Brewin but all in all, the Irishman just didn’t do enough with his time on the feet to get the job done.
Cowley, with this loss, moves to 2-2 but make no mistake, this guy’s striking of a very high calibre and with some tweaks, we have no doubt he will be able to regain his momentum.
