Michael Bisping managed to get under the skin of the UFC’s bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt after he dismissed claims that the 135lb co-main event is the people’s main event.
We are now just eight short days away from the November 4 UFC 217 and though excitement levels have certainly been higher in the lead-up to a blockbuster UFC event, the hype is expected to slowly but surely build as the promotion’s return to Madison Square Garden grows nearer.
The somewhat mixed reaction to the night’s main event between Michael Bisping and the returning Georges St-Pierre has been a surprise to some, especially those who experienced the triumphant reign of GSP during his years spent atop the 170lb division.
Really though, with a card as stacked as the one UFC 217 has to offer, I doubt many will complain about St-Pierre’s undeserving status as the middleweight number one contender come fight night.
The fight that has garnered the most buzz apart from the controversial headlining bout, however, is the one that falls directly below it – the bantamweight pairing of Cody Garbrandt and TJ Dillashaw from the 135lb strap.
This has led to fans (and indeed Cody and TJ themselves) describing it as the ‘real’ main attraction of the night or the ‘people’s main event’.
Either way, both fights will hopefully be contested on the night if all goes well and regardless of which one you prefer, when the octagon doors close we will be treated to anywhere up to twenty-five minutes of compelling action from both.
The middleweight champion Bisping actually addressed the views of Cody Garbrandt specifically head on as he spoke to the media during a recent conference call made by him and his opponent St-Pierre, and in true Bisping fashion, did not pull any of his punches.
“Yeah, listen I’ve never paid to watch somebody that’s the size of my leg in my life. Cody needs to spend less time plucking his eyebrows and more time living in the real world, because it ain’t the main event, simple as that.
“So he can dress it up however he wants, Cody. I love Cody. Cody’s awesome, he’s an amazing fighter. But don’t talk s**t about me, pal.”
Not willing to sit quietly, ‘No Love’ took to Twitter and managed to one-up Bisping in his response.
