Rory MacDonald & Ben Askren Fuel Rumours Of Eventual Clash After Recent Back-And-Forth

Two of the very best fighters outside of the UFC right now had a public war of words recently that has fueled rumours that they will one day meet inside the cage.

It’s not exactly a stretch to say that a contest between Rory MacDonald and Ben Askren would be the most intriguing fight available in the sport outside of the UFC right now.

Rory MacDonald clinched the Bellator welterweight title earlier this year to establish himself as the promotion’s top 170lb fighter and since making the switch from the UFC, he has looked like he has truly started to come into his prime. A true technician at work, the Canadian has made clear his desire to fight the very best at multiple weight-divisions over the course of the coming years but in Ben Askren, he could well have the opportunity to take home a very special win for his career.

Askren retired from mixed martial arts in November of 2017 after defeating the legendary Shinya Aoki but in the time since he has flirted with the idea of returning if a suitably prestigious fight were to become available to him.

His unbeaten career has seen him utilize his masterful grappling to completely dominate his opponents and with his status as a former champion of the Bellator welterweight division, the narrative is set for what could be the biggest fight in the history of the organisation.

Both men were involved in a bit of a dispute over Twitter recently and while nothing is set in stone, this could prove to be the push that this hypothetical matchup needed if both parties are indeed interested in making it happen.

A cordial but still competitive chat from two of the best 170lb-rs on the planet. Despite his dominance, questions have still lingered over the career of Ben Askren and I think it’s fair to say that a win over a fighter of MacDonald’s calibre would answer them all instantaneously.

Your move Bellator!
