Ben Askren Hopes Masvidal Doesn’t Ruin Fight With Backstage Antics

Ben Askren has expressed his hope that Jorge Masvidal doesn’t do anything brash backstage that could put the pair’s fight on UFC 239 in jeopardy.

Masvidal was fresh off of the biggest win of his career to date, stopping Liverpool’s Darren Till in front of a crowd of his countrymen in the UFC London main-event earlier this year.

In the post-fight, Masvidal’s post-fight interview was interrupted by welterweight Leon Edwards off-camera, who, as he passed by, managed to stir up a reaction from Jorge – one sufficient enough to see him fire off a multi-punch combo before being dragged away by those present.

Speaking in a recent interview (via MMA Junkie), his UFC 239 opponent Ben Askren cited Jorge’s recent attack on Leon Edwards as a cause for concern ahead of their eagerly anticipated main-card showdown.

“I hope he stays away from me so that we can both get a paycheck on Saturday night. I hope he’s not such a dipsh*t that he would ruin that for both of us.

But I’m sure the UFC would handle proper precautions to make sure he’s not a moron and that we both can fight and get paid on Saturday night.

“That’s who I wanted anyways. I’m good. One thing about Robbie is I like him. There’s a lot of guys I don’t like. There’s a lot of guys I would enjoy fighting way more than (Robbie), and Jorge is one of them.”

People are very quick to forget exactly how impressive Ben Askren’s UFC debut actually was.

To emerge from the brink of defeat with a stunning comeback over one of the division’s most decorated fighters is a feat that should not be sullied in any way due to the somewhat controversial nature of the stoppage.

Whether he can pull off a cleaner victory over Jorge Masvidal next month remains to be seen.
