ESPN’s Ariel Helwani has made it known that he believes Khabib Nurmagomedov to be the most-dominant fighter in the history of the UFC.
And it’s a viewpoint that does seem to be gathering in traction with each passing victory from The Eagle.
After making the divisional interim-champion Dustin Poirier look completely out of his depth for the vast majority of their UFC 242 clash in Abu Dhabi, Nurmagomedov’s claim to be the world’s greatest pound-for-pound mixed martial artist has certainly gained some merit.
Perhaps in some ways putting him ahead of Jon Jones is a tad bit premature but in the eyes of Helwani, Khabib – over the course of his 28-fight run, has done enough to distinguish himself as the most dominant force the game has ever seen.
Speaking during a recent segment on Ariel & The Bad Guy, the famed reporter gave his take on the Russian’s current standing.
“Yes, unequivocally, yes. And I want to make something very clear here, just because he’s the most dominant fighter in UFC history, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s the best fighter in UFC history. Doesn’t mean I’m saying he’s the G.O.A.T – the greatest of all-time.
“It doesn’t even mean I’m saying he’s the pound-for-pound king. If you’re asking about pure dominance, yes, and let me explain why.
“This man is now 12-0 in the UFC, 28-0 as a professional. He has only lost one round, one round in his UFC career – that was round three against Conor McGregor.
“When you consider the record, 28-0, no-one who has ever fought in the UFC has ever started that kind of career like that. Undefeated in his first 28 fights.”
Right now, it’s pretty clear that the world of MMA is ready to see a matchup between Khabib and Tony Ferguson booked for a fifth time but in recent days, the Dagestani’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz told TMZ that El Cucuy may well be brushed aside if the opportunity to face the legendary Georges St-Pierre becomes available.
“Nobody really cares about what Tony says. Nobody gives a s**t really. As far as I know, GSP is next. That is what I want.
“Tony doesn’t get what he wants. We get what Khabib wants, and if Khabib calls me and says he wants Georges St-Pierre, Georges St-Pierre will be next.”
