UFC light-heavyweight contender Anthony Smith has claimed that he has already entered talks with the UFC to take on Jon Jones in his next outing.
Jones has stated his intention to fight regularly in 2019 after his more recent period of inactivity and while it is expected that he will engage in a third showdown with heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier at some point next year, the contenders at 205lbs still clearly want some.
The champ won back the belt he never lost at UFC 232 last weekend with a masterful domination of his old foe Alexander Gustafsson in the night’s main event and now, he looks set to restart the momentum he carried before his problems outside of the octagon got in the way of his progress.
Anthony Smith well and truly burst onto the scene in 2018, defeating Rashad Evans, Shogun Rua, and Volkan Oezdemir to establish himself as the division’s top challenger.
Speaking to TMZSports in a recent interview, Smith claimed that he is in talks to be Jones’ first challenge of his new era reigning over the light-heavyweights.
“It sounds like he’s in. Of course, [my manager] has already been talking to the UFC and I think that they’re working that out and seeing what that looks like as far as timelines and stuff, but I’m in.
“Any time, any place, anywhere, I’m ready. I’ll fight Jon this weekend if he wants to.
“It’s what the fans want to see. They don’t want to see Jon go in there and beat up on Corey Anderson or whoever else. They don’t want to see that sh*t. There’s nothing there.”
