Alexander Gustafsson has reportedly made a verbal agreement to take on dangerous light-heavyweight contender Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 227.
A year is a long stretch to spend out of the octagon and while Gustafsson’s last victory might have been massively impressive, he has cut a quiet figure on the 205lb scene in recent times.
That’s not to say he hasn’t been vocal, though. With champion Daniel Cormier now on a collision course with Stipe Miocic, it did appear for a while that Gus was content to wait for his third shot at the strap. Thankfully, if the reports are to be believed, he is now set for a showdown against one of the division’s fresh new contenders.
BREAKING: Alexander Gustafsson (@AlexTheMauler) and Volkan Oezdemir (@volkan_oezdemir) have verbally agreed to meet at UFC 227 on Aug. 4 in Los Angeles, multiple sources say. UFC has been working on a fight for Gustafsson on that card for awhile, finally got one done.

Volkan Oezdemir fast-tracked his way to a showdown with DC in one of the most unique and admittedly strange runs we have ever seen in the sport. Debuting as a short-notice opponent for Ovince St. Preux at UFC Houston, ‘No Time’ followed up a split decision win over OSP with a pair of sub-minute knockouts of Jimi Manuwa and Misha Cirkunov – something that earned him his UFC 220 shot at the belt.
And yes, it was made apparent very early on that there was a gulf in class between the two but make no mistake, Oezdemir remains a very dangerous customer at light-heavyweight.
With the fight scheduled to be included on the absolutely stacked UFC 227 on August 4, the LA card is slowly putting together a lineup that will offer a very impressive follow-up to this weekend’s blockbuster, UFC 226.
