Throwback Thursday: Pat Sullivan’s Strike vs Partizan

With the confirmation today that all four Premier Division sides competing in Europe this season have been awarded their UEFA licences, it got us thinking back to European performances of the past, and in particular Pat Sullivan’s superb strike against Partizan Belgrade.

After equalising through Sullivan’s now-iconic hit, Rovers were given a lifeline. His goal was to be crucial in helping Michael O’Neill’s men progress all the way to extra time, and with Rovers holding on, they were handed the opportunity to make Irish footballing history when Stephen O’Donnell stepped up to take what would subsequently be the decisive penalty.

O’Donnell of course made no mistake from the spot in what was one of Irish football’s greatest nights as the Hoops ran out 2-1 victors.

It was Sullivan’s superb strike however which remains etched in the memories of not only Hoops fans but League of Ireland supporters worldwide.

We await with excitement the outcome of this summer’s draw, in which all Irish sides will hope to re-enact what Rovers did before them.
