After suffering a late 2-1 loss to Colombia in London, a strong USA team will travel to Dublin with a number of players having a point to prove, writes Stephen Loftus.
USA coach Jurgen Klinsmann has included many of his experienced stars who sprung to fame at the World Cup in his squad to face Ireland on Tuesday night. After succumbing to a late Teofilo Gutierrez goal against Colombia on Friday, this US team will look to end their November friendly schedule on a high note against an Irish side ailing from their disappointing loss at Celtic Park.
It is highly likely that Klinsmann will make a couple of changes to the side that lost at Craven Cottage on Friday but any changes will not weaken his team with Jozy Altidore, Brad Guzan, Kyle Beckermann and the exciting Julian Green all likely to feature.
Klinsmann controversially opted to include Lee Nguyen in his squad to face Colombia, who has not played for the side for seven years. The beaten World Cup quarter-finalists find themselves in a quandry, with doubts over a number of their older players still being in the squad for the 2018 World Cup.
Klinsmann finds himself with a mixture of youthful enthusiasm and experience, as he prepares for the CONCACAF Gold Cup next summer.
DeAndre Yedlin is likely to be rested for this game after featuring versus Colombia but there should be no shortage of recognisable faces on display Tonight.
Geoff Cameron of Stoke City, Brad Guzan of Aston Villa and Sunderland flop Jozy Altidore will all feature with Altidore the favourite to wear the armband. Perhaps the most intriguing part of Tuesday’s team selection will be whether or not Klinsmann opts to start 19 year-old striker Rubio Rubin, who plays in the Dutch Eredivisie and looks a talented forward.
Midfielder Julian Green made the controversial decision to choose the US team instead of the World champions Germany before the World Cup and has always been a favourite of the current manager. He remains one of the most coveted prospects around Europe and is sure to feature against Ireland on Tuesday.
Fabian Johnson and playmaker Mix Diskerud are among the players with most to prove as Klinsmann will look for players to cement their places in midfield ahead of the Gold Cup. Diskerud was stifled by the Colombians but might be given another chance to prove himself, while Alejandro Bedoya will partner him in midfield.
This game might be a a bit more than just a November friendly with players on both sides looking to attract their manager’s attention for future games. A hotly contested game beckons.
