Sligo Rovers’ chairman Joe Burns has today released, via Sligo’s official website, a club statement regarding the abuse ‘directed at the Bit O’ Red’s players on social media’.
It has been a difficult opening to the season for Sligo. They have yet to record a victory and find themselves third from bottom in the table with just two points.
This largely unexpected opening from the Bit O’ Red has preceded what the statement describes as ‘abuse’ towards the ‘club’s players on social media’.
The statement concludes by thanking the fans for ‘the support which has been received so far this year’.
The Sligo chairman’s statement can be read in full below.
“Sligo Rovers would like to condemn the recent abuse which has been directed at the club’s players on social media.
“While all fans will have their opinions, and have the right to express those opinions, the aiming of personal abuse towards players can only have a negative impact on results.
“The team is having a difficult run at the moment and the disappointment at this is shared by everyone.
“All at the club are working hard to ensure that we improve our league position and bring us back to, our now accustomed position, of challenging for honours.
“On behalf of the club I would like to thank our fans for all the support which has been received so far this year and we hope to see all of our supporters get behind the team for the season ahead and in particular for our two forthcoming games, this Friday’s game with Bray Wanderers and on Monday versus Derry City, at the Showgrounds.”
