Waterford United will be hoping to bounce back from last weekend’s defeat as the Blues welcome Shelbourne to the RSC on Friday evening.
The Blues come into the game on the back of a 1-0 defeat at the hands of league new boys Cabinteely last weekend. Despite some early chances, Tommy Griffin’s men were unable to find a way past Evan Whelan, as a second half John McKeown goal gave the Stradbrook side all three points.
Shelbourne travel to the south-east after a dissapointing loss last weekend. Despite a late Gareth Coughlan goal, the Reds were unable to catch an Athlone side who made sure of the spoils with a Daniel Purdy goal on 90 minutes to given them a 3-1 win.
Mikie Rowe’s first senior goal wasn’t enough for the Blues last time the teams met last September, as Shelbourne collected all three points in a 3-1 win.
The sides shared 16 goals between them last season in their four league games as well as one cup tie. The Blues drew 3-3 with Shelbourne in the opening match, before Shelbourne came out on top of the remaining games.
The Blues will be without Shane Nolan, who serves an additional two-match ban for his red card against Finn Harps two weeks ago. Brian Nolan and Jack Doherty are both very doubtful after injuries against Cabinteely last weekend, but otherwise Blues boss Tommy Griffin has a full squad to choose from.
Shelbourne will be without Simon Dixon and Paul Andrews who both continue to recover from injuries picked up against Finn Harps. Dylan Glade will miss the clash due to a hamstring problem, while under-19 Irish international Sean Heaney is a doubt, having just returned from international duty.
