Rory Gaffney Leaves Limerick For Cambridge United

Limerick FC have confirmed on their official website that star striker Rory Gaffney is to join League Two club Cambridge United.

Gaffney joined Limerick in 2011 from Mervue United and went on to help with promotion to the Premier Division in 2012.

The same year, he won the PFAI First Division Player of the Year and this season scored 14 times, finished as fourth highest scorer in the Premier Division and was named as Player of the Month, the first Limerick player to win the honour since 1992.

Speaking to LimerickFC.ie Rory explained,

“I’ve had a wonderful 3 ½ years with Limerick FC but I’ve always wanted to experience playing cross channel and I am delighted that I am now joining Cambridge United and fulfilling this goal.  I would like to thank all at Limerick FC, the chairman, staff, fans and my fellow players who have supported me throughout my time at the club and helped me develop as a player. I wish the club continued success in the future.”

Limerick manager Martin Russell had this to say,

“I want to wish Rory all the best with his move and I’m sure he will be a huge success with Cambridge.  I want to thank him not only for the goals he scored for Limerick but his commitment and professionalism.”
