Owen Heary’s Sligo Rovers travel to Drogheda on Friday night in search of their first league win of the season.
Drogheda started their season with a hard-fought 1-0 win away to Bray on Saturday before being knocked out of the EA Sports Cup by First Division side Shelbourne on Tuesday evening in United Park.
Johnny McDonnell has a near-full squad to choose from, with Mark Hughes the only player out through injury. Drogheda were without Alan Byrne and Shane Dunne for the trip to Bray but both returned from suspension to face Shels during the week.
Speaking about the opposition to Drogs’ official website, McDonnell said,
“It’s early doors but I think Sligo may surprise a few people this season. They were unfortunate last week against a very good Cork side and they’re capable of beating anyone on their day. I’d imagine that they will be challenging up towards the top half of the table come the last few games of the season.”
The visitors opened their league campaign with a 1-1 draw at home to last season’s runners up, Cork City before thrashing the Mayo League 8-0 in the EA Sports Cup on Tuesday.
Owen Heary will be without goalkeeper Richard Brush and defender Jeff Henderson through injury. As a result of Brush being injured, Sligo confirmed on their official website that they are registering Ciaran Kelly, their former keeper and current first-team coach to have him as back up to Coulter. The Bit O’ Red hope to have him available in time to face Drogheda.
Speaking to the official Sligo website, Heary had this to say about Drogheda,
“They had a good start against Bray, they won the game and got their three points. They will be a tough team to break down but I expect them to have a go at us as well. So we just have to do our job and get the win which would put us ahead of them in the table, that’s our aim.”
