Late Griffin Strike Wins It For 10-Man Bohemians

A late strike from substitute Marc Griffin handed Bohemians the win in what was a eventful and hot-headed affair against a Drogheda side who have now picked up just one point in four games.

Drogheda could have been ahead on 15 minutes when Cathal Brady played a great ball down the line to Kavanagh, his cross into the box was taken down by Maher, who saw his shot well saved by Delany.

Two minutes later came the first controversial moment of this game. Daryl Kavanagh was brought down on the edge of the box by what looked to be a mix of both Prendergast and Fitzgerald.

At first, it looked as though referee Paul McLaughlin showed a second yellow to Fitzgerald, even though he had not previously been booked. In the end it was Prendergast, who had been booked a minute previous for a separate foul on Kavanagh, which should have seen him get a straight red, who walked.

The visitors continued to look dangerous throughout, especially down the left through Evans and Fitzgerald but it was Keith Buckley who had the visitors’ first real chance of the game as his shot went just wide of the post.

At the very end of the half, came the next controversial decision in the game. Drogheda were awarded a penalty after Anto Murphy was adjudged to have brought down Stephen Maher in the box by the linesman. Referee McLaughlin trusted the decision of his assistant and pointed to the spot. Daryl Kavanagh stepped up to take the spot kick but his weak effort was easily saved by Delany.

The second was nowhere near as eventful to the first with both sides limited to very few chances.

The first goal-scoring opportunity of the half fell to the visitors. Paddy Kavanagh slipped the ball through to Dean Kelly who saw his effort slide just past the far post.

Drogheda should have scored on 86 minutes when Delany, for the only time in the match, was caught out of position. Duffy attempted the lob, Fitzgerald headed it on to the bar and the ball fell to Kavanagh, who wildly shot over the bar.

The winning goal came in the 88th minute, against the run of play, as Dillon played the ball through to Griffin, who put a cool finish by Schlingermann to win the game for Bohs.
