Galway United manager Tommy Dunne has brought his number of options to 19 ahead of the beginning of the Tribesmen’s Premier Division campaign with the signings of Andy O’Connell and Padraic Cunningham.
O’Connell signs having represented Cork City and more recently Cobh Ramblers. The 21-year-old is a towering, intelligent footballer with fantastic passing ability and a keen eye for goal.
Although at this level O’Connell has stood out as a midfielder or centre-back, the Corkman is well accustomed to playing as a striker from his time at youth level.
Commenting on the signing, Dunne told galwayunitedfc.ie that he was impressed with O’Connell’s ability in a recent friendly game.
“I was impressed with Andy when he lined out for Cobh against us in a trial game at FOTA Island a few weeks back. I know him from my time at Cork City as well and he played 90 minutes against us near the end of last season in a tough game down in St. Colman’s Park.”
“Andy can play in defence or midfield and he’s well over six foot tall and he gives us some much needed presence and physicality, he will certainly be an asset to us and we know he can play too. We’re happy to add him to our group.”
Dunne has also retained the services of Padraic Cunningham, an 18-year-old striker who United previously signed from fellow Galway club Mervue United. Although Cunningham featured mostly from the bench last term, the Galway boss sees huge potential in the young striker.
“Padraic is a big prospect and we’re delighted to have signed him up on his first professional deal.
“He’s showing a lot of promise and his attitude is second to none. We’re excited with the potential we see in him and we’ve invested in that, so that he can continue to develop and improve as a player at Galway United Football Club.”
Galway host Athlone Town tonight in a pre-season friendly at 7:30pm with both signings expected to play a part. The Tribesmen will be aiming to make it two wins in a row following their 2-0 victory over NUIG last Tuesday.
