Ex-Waterford United man and Accrington Stanley loanee Sean Maguire has been called-up to Noel King’s Irish under-21 side ahead of their game against Andorra tomorrow night.
That qualifying match ironically brings Maguire back to where it all started at his former club Waterford United’s home ground.
Currently on-loan at Accrington Stanley from West Ham, manager King is pleased to have someone with a goal threat to call upon as replacement for Wigan Athletic’s Matt Hamilton, who has pulled out of the squad with a stomach injury.
“Sean is a local from Kilkenny so it’s nice for him. He has an eye for goal and has been in good form on-loan at Accrington Stanley this season,” King told the FAI.
“He has scored five times for them in League Two so I hope it goes well for him with us this week.
“Training has gone well. There are doubts about Jack Connors and Shamir Goodwin so we’ll see how they progress after they complete their extensive treatment with our doctor John Chute and physiotherapist Kevin Mulholland. Naturally we hope they’ll be ready for us.”
Ireland face Andorra in their 2017 UEFA U-21 Championships qualifying game at the RSC tomorrow night, with kick-off at 7:45pm.
