With just a week to go until the new Championship season starts, many Irish players in England’s second-tier will be hoping to help guide their clubs to the Promised Land that is the Premier League.
Although it is always the ambition for Irish players to be plying their trade in the Premier League, it’s always heartening to see players who came from the League of Ireland making a mark in England’s second-tier.
Preston North End have a healthy Irish contingent among their ranks and Daryl Horgan and Graham Burke both played an important role in their latest preseason victory, a 3-0 away win over Oldham.
Burke provided the cross for the opening goal by Louis Moult and then Daryl Horgan smashed home a 25-yard wonder strike which went in off the post to give North End a 2-0 lead.
Worryingly, Sean Maguire left the field after just 20 minutes after taking a knock. The club and Martin O’Neill will hope that the injury isn’t too serious.
Meanwhile, Shane Long scored for Southampton in their 2-0 victory over Dijon.
