Wexford Youths WFC Enjoy Impressive Win

Cork City fell to a heavy defeat to league leaders Wexford Youths on Sunday in Ferrcarrig Park in the Women’s National League Champions as a Claire O’Riordan and Carol Breen inspired Wexford hit ten goals past the hapless Leesiders.

The Leesiders faced disaster early in the game when Ciara McNamara was shown a straight red in the first minute of the match after bringing down Carol Breen as last defender. The decision set out what would be a difficult game for the Leesiders as from the free kick, Kylie Murphy opened the scoring for the Wexfordians. The Cork club would hold out until just before half time when three quick-fire goals – a brace from Claire O’Riordan and a strike from Carol Breen after great link-up player with Becky Cassin – saw the Youths take a commanding four nil lead in at the break.

Things didn’t improve after half-time for the Leesiders as Carol Breen completed her hat-trick with the third goal coming from a superb solo run and strike. Shauna Wall then was on the receiving end of a Breen cross to finish past Fennelly. The game then received a long stoppage as first new signing Norma Healy replaced Angie Carry in the Cork backline after an injury while Edel Kennedy was forced off for Wexford to bring the game to ten v ten. This was reduced further when a bad clash of heads between Shauna Wall and Norma Healy resulted in both players needing to leave the field. As Tara Murphy picked up an injury in the warm-up, both sides were forced to continue with only nine a side each. Despite the reduced numbers, Claire O’Riordan grabbed another brace of goals for Wexford before Becky Cassin rounded off a great day for the Youths.

Next up for Cork City is a home game against UCD Waves next Sunday the 1st February in Bishopstown Stadium at 2 o’clock. I more positive news for the club, the recently announced U18 Academy in partnership with Cork Women’s and Schoolgirls Soccer League will begin this Saturday with Registration closing on the 28th January – interested attendees should apply by contacting the club through their website.
