Rising Irish Star Lee O’Connor Completes Move To Celtic

Manchester United academy standout Lee O’Connor has completed his move to Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.

O’Connor has signed a four year deal at the Hoops, leaving United after failing to make a first team appearance for the club but impressing at numerous underage levels at Old Trafford.

Called up by the former Ireland manager Martin O’Neill during his side’s Nations League outing against Denmark and with over 100 appearances under his belt at youth level with United, the future certainly does seem bright for O’Connor.

The 19-year-old joins fellow Irish underage internationals Jonathan Afolabi, Luca Connell and Barry Coffey at the club and O’Connor will be hoping that the move will prove to be an invaluable opportunity for one of the nation’s up-and-coming prospects to gain some great experience.

The versatile defender who can also operate in the midfield area was highly rated at Manchester United with former defender and fellow Irish international John O’Shea singing his praises in recent months – O’Connor certainly seems to be impressing the right people.

“Yeah, I’ve seen a bit of him recently,” said O’Shea.

“I did a thing for MUTV, United were playing Reading U23s and I saw Lee up close and other people had been talking to me about him and I’d been trying to keep an eye on his career.

“Look he was quality, top quality on the pitch. He looked very comfortable, he went right-back to left-back in a breeze, it was no problem to him.”

U21 manager Stephen Kenny has called upon his services after a run at U19 level that saw him captain the side to a semi-final spot in this year’s U19 European Championships – something that could well see him play a key role in their bid to make it through the upcoming qualification campaign.
