Tee Times As Rory McIlroy In The Hunt To End Major Drought

Rory McIlroy is in the hunt to win his first major since 2014 as he lies just four shots off the lead heading into the third round of the US Open at Pebble Beach, California.

The Holywood man got off to a great start in his second round as he birdied the fourth, seventh and 11th holes to leave him just one shot off the leader Justin Rose at the time.

However, an aggressive approach on the back-nine saw McIlroy bogey the 13th and then double-bogey the par-5 14th.

McIlroy picked himself up afterwards to clinch back-to-back birdies on the 15th and 16th to ultimately card a 69 which leaves him -5 for the tournament and four shots behind the leader Gary Woodland.

Woodland’s playing partner was Offaly man Shane Lowry who had an uphill battle to make the cut after shooting a 75 in the opening round but he bounced back with a 69 to guarantee his involvement for the weekend. Lowry is +2 for the tournament but will hope to climb back up the leaderboard when the third round commences on Saturday.

Graeme McDowell is also in the hunt although he is two shots further behind McIlroy on -3 for the tournament.

McDowell opened his US Open with a 69 before following that up with a 70 during the second round and his recent form seems to be paying dividends as he’s still in the hunt to clinch a second US Open title.
