Lowry shot a 66 to leave him just one shot behind the current joint-leaders. The Offaly man recovered well from a disappointing bogey on the Par-4 third hole to record birdies on fifth, ninth, 12th, 14th and 18th holes in what was otherwise a blemish-free round.

Elsewhere Graeme McDowell struggled this morning as he finds himself on +2 after the opening round while Seamus Power [level], Darren Clarke [level] and Gavin Moynihan [+2] will be hoping for improvements on Friday.

Padraig Harrington (-1), Paul Dunne (level) and Cormac Sharvin (-1) have just got their rounds underway.
