Offaly’s Shane Lowry picked up his first European Tour win in four years following a one-shot victory over Richard Sterne at the HSBC Championship in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
Lowry went into the final day in Abu Dhabi with a three-shot lead over Sterne and started strongly with a birdie on the par 4 first as he looked for his first win on the European Tour since 2015.
Sterne however matched Lowry on the first hole and went on an incredible run on the front nine birdieing six holes and bogeying just one to snatch the lead from the Offaly man who went into the turn one over for the day.
Where the South African began to falter on the next six holes, picking up one bogey and five pars, Lowry clawed his way back into contention birdieing the 12th and the 13th to come within one of Sterne.
The momentum had been swinging back and forth all round between the top two but when Sterne struggled from the bunker on the 16th, Lowry was steady and found himself co-leader on -17 with just two holes left to play.
On the par 4 17th, Lowry struck a wayward approach but proved he was still up for the fight with a clutch putt from distance to stay neck and neck with his South African going onto the final hole.
With 71 holes played and nothing to separate the pair, Sterne struggled with his second shot on the par 5 finding the path as Lowry found the green.
Sterne narrowly missed a birdie putt from distance while Lowry holed from around eight feet to seal victory in Abu Dhabi.
