Cavan golfing sensation, Leona Maguire claimed her first professional victory at the Windsor Golf Classic in California overnight.
Currently, in her second year on tour following her graduation from Duke University last year, Maguire picked up her first win on the professional circuit following a dramatic playoff against Thailand’s Pajaree Anannarukarn.
Maguire hit a final round of 65 but was forced into a one-hole playoff by Anannarukarn who hit a birdie on the 18th. However, Maguire hit a birdie of her own in the playoff to claim the victory and the $22,5000 prize money.

Her maiden win will come as no surprise to golf fans given that Maguire had one of the most dominant amateur careers in the history of the sport, becoming the sport’s longest-reigning Number 1. This afforded her the opportunity to move to North Carolina and pursue her dream of playing golf full-time as well as gaining a free education.
What made her transition easier was the presence of her twin sister, Lisa, who also attended Duke University on a golf scholarship. Upon graduation, Maguire turned pro and was expected to make a huge splash in 2019. Now with the first win under her belt, you get the sense that it is the first of many.
Maguire’s management company is own by Mullingar’s, Niall Horan and the One Direction star also sent his congratulations to Maguire following her dramatic victory.
