From a hero at Hazeltine to a villain Le Golf National, it’s been a brutal week for Patrick Reed.
‘Captain America’ had earned a reputation to challenge that of Ian Poulter’s ‘postman’ moniker with his performance in the 2016 Ryder Cup, but here, the Masters champion managed just one point throughout his three matches.
Paired twice with Tiger Woods in the fourballs, Reed lost twice to Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood, before facing another fiery competitor in Tyrrell Hatton today in the singles matches.
The shush-happy American was roundly criticised for doing so to the crowd during yesterday’s defeat, having only made one birdie during the round.
He did so again today, this time drawing the ire of legendary coach and Sky Sports commentator Butch Harmon.
Reed was two up on the 16th hole, but Molinari had just sunk the winning putt for the Europeans, basically rendering his match redundant. But he wasn’t to be denied one last chance to rile up a European base that has hardly taken kindly to him.
Sinking a birdie putt to win the match 3&2, Reed turned to shush the crowd, though he clapped afterwards to suggest that it was more tongue-in-cheek than anything else.
Butch Harmon still took issue with it, however.
“Oh, don’t come with that crap! What are you doing? That’s ridiculous. Show some class, Patrick!”
