Brandon Stone Misses Putt For Historic 59 En Route To Winning Scottish Open

The course record at Gullane Golf Club was broken multiple times this week, but the best was saved until last.

Scotsman Connor Syme shot a 62 on Friday to set the new record, which only lasted a matter of hours. Hideto Tanihara of Japan followed him into the clubhouse with a second round 61.

Brandon Stone timed his stellar round of 60 to perfection though, with his Sunday scorcher good enough to win the 2018 Scottish Open by four shots.

Three shots behind overnight leader Jens Dantorp, the South African managed a blemish-free round of eight birdies and an eagle. Stone admitted afterwards that he was unaware of the chance to shoot a historic 59 until he reached the 18th green, where an 8-foot birdie putt would have seen him shoot the 59 in European Tour history.

Such were his nerves, he insisted that his caddy read the putt, but it just missed left for a -20 total.

Nonetheless, he will be delighted with the win, which grants him a place in the upcoming Open Championship at Carnoustie. Three spots in the Major were up for grabs, with second placed Eddie Pepperell also gaining an Open berth by virtue of his -16 total, helped by a final round 64.

American Luke List, Dantorp and 2008 Masters champion Trevor Immelman were joint third on -15 each. List already qualified for the event, and by virtue of his higher world ranking (albeit at a lowly 322), Dantorp qualified for next week at the expense of Immelman.

2015 Scottish Open champion Rickie Fowler could only muster a final round 68 to finish 14 under, but his game looks in great shape ahead of the visit to the so-called ‘Carnastie’.

Likewise for Justin Rose (a final round 67 for a -13 total), Charley Hoffman (68 for -11) and Patrick Reed (67 for -10).

Graeme McDowell’s bid to qualify petered out over the weekend after a pair of 71s, but with the 2019 Open taking place at his local club of Royal Portrush, GMac already has a massive incentive to turn his attention to.
