Dublin’s Leinster MFC Hopes In Serious Danger After Surprise Wicklow Defeat

Dublin vs Wicklow Wicklow's Oisin Cullen and Darrafgh McLoghney of Dublin

Wicklow caused a major shock on Wednesday night with victory over reigning over reigning Leinster minor football champions Dublin.

The holders have moved a step closer to a surprise early exit with a 2-06 to 0-08 defeat at Parnell Park, one that sees Wicklow leapfrog their beaten opponents into second place in Group 1.

Elsewhere in Group 1, Meath secured their place in the semi-finals with a one-point victory over Offaly, 1-13 to 1-12 the final score, while Louth condemned Westmeath to their fourth straight defeat by a scoreline of 3-11 to 2-11.

Wednesday’s result set up a grandstand final round, one that will see Dublin, Offaly and Wicklow battle it out for that second semi-final spot. The latter are in action against Meath, where a will win see them to the last four – however, one of the former two could still sneak it provided they hold up their ends of the bargain by seeing off Westmeath and Louth respectively.

In Group 2, meanwhile, Kildare secured a semi-final spot with a commanding win against Laois, while Longford could take the second spot (at Laois’s expense) if they defeat Kildare in next week’s group deciders.
