Waterford Click Into Gear To See Off 14-Man Cork

Brian Barry reports from Páirc Uí Chaoimh as Waterford beat Cork 1-20 to 1-15.

Winless Waterford travelled to Páirc Uí Chaoimh today in Division 1A of the Allianz National Hurling League. The Rebels were coming off the back of two losses themselves, and needed a win to allay any fears of relegation.

It was clear from throw-in that this was a much-improved Waterford effort, with more precision and accuracy in their striking. The score of the game came early on when Tadhg de Búrca fielded the ball around his square when an Anthony Nash free dropped short. De Búrca passed it out, before collecting the ball once again and driving it over from half-way.

The teams went point for point after that until the 20th minute, when Patrick Horgan stole in to bat it past Stephen O’Keeffe in the Déise goals.

However, Derek McGrath’s side responded almost immediately, as Mikey Kearney took advantage of a mistake in the Cork backs to fire it home.

The crucial moment of the game followed moments later, when Seamus Harnedy was shown a straight red card for dropping a knee on Barry Coughlan. With the teams locked at 1-07 each at that point, it looked like Cork had a mountain to climb.

From there, Waterford kicked on to establish a three-point lead at half-time.

John Meyler brought Robbie O’Flynn on for Conor Lehane at half-time, who appeared to pick up a bang before the break. In the opening exchanges of the second half, Waterford were wasteful with their chances, and Horgan pulled the game level on 48 minutes, at 1-13 each.

However, three frees from Pauric Mahony quickly restored the lead, and from there the Déise never looked back, as de Búrca caught ball after ball in the backs to keep the Rebels at bay. Stephen O’Keeffe made a save from a Shane Kingston shot in the final minute of normal time, as Waterford won out 1-20 to 1-15.

Waterford have now given themselves some chance of avoiding the relegation play-off, but they will need to win against Clare next week.
