Limerick fans will have enjoyed Sunday’s victory over Galway immensely. Not only did John Kiely’s men gain promotion from Division 1A, but the manner in which they did it was all the more impressive.
At half-time of the game, things were not looking so great for the Shannonsiders. At eight points down Limerick were extremely wasteful with the ball.
Striking 18 wides in total, you could be forgiven for thinking it was going to be another one of those days for Limerick.
However, the Treaty men answered many of their critics by proving their mettle, clawing back at Galway’s lead to exit with a two-point victory.
Making this victory even more satisfying for the 2013 Munster champions is that they did so without their Na Piarsaigh contingent.
With a brace of Under-21 All-Ireland titles under many of these players’ belts, potentially two All-Ireland Club Championship titles and several Fitzgibbon titles all in recent times, this side’s confidence will be sky high.
Limerick will now face Clare in a quarter-final tie, which is sure to interest many neutrals as well as supporters of both counties.
The main objective has been achieved, however, by Limerick. At long last they are promoted from Division 1B.
Barry Murphy was awarded the Man of the Match award for his display while Aaron Gillane, Seamus Flanagan, Sean Finn and Richie English were all highly impressive.
