It’s happened again…
The last time Galway and Dublin faced off in the Hurling Super 11’s at Fenway Park in Boston the occasion was marred by an all-out brawl. That was back in 2015 and the scenes left a sour taste in the mouths of the 28,000 spectators who turned out to witness the modified version of hurling as part of the celebration of the Irish festival in Boston.
While the exhibition returns across the Atlantic this evening, this time around there will be a double header as Tipperary take on Clare in a fixture succeeding the All-Ireland champions’ clash with Pat Gilroy’s Dubs. In the hybrid game, teams are eleven-a-side while there is goals only allowed on a smaller pitch than a usual GAA field. There is a designated scoring zone and goals scored from inside the zone are worth three points while any shot that finds the net from outside said zone is worth five points.
Well, while the first half served up some cracking finishes and pieces of skill worth writing home about, it also served up an unsavoury mini riot between numerous players reminiscent of the pair’s previous clash here.
In what appeared to be Round 2 following on from the infamous 2015 meeting of these teams at the home of the Boston Red Sox, there was wrestling which wouldn’t look out of place in the UFC and hurleys flying wildly amongst a few misplaced helmets in this brawl.
