Watch: All The Frees From Historic Clash Between Clare & Limerick

Clare and Limerick provided a highly entertaining Bank Holiday Monday for hurling supporters who tuned into TG4. The pair needed a free-taking competition to separate them after 100 minutes of hurling.

For many stages of this game, it looked as though Clare would emerge to the semi-finals with the banner leading for the majority of the normal time.

Once again in the first bout of extra time, it appeared as though the Banner had done enough, however, a last-gasp Diarmaid Byrnes goal put halt to that.

At half-time of the second bout of extra time, the sides remained inseparable once more with the score standing at 4-20 to 0-32 points.

With just five minutes to separate the teams, neutrals began to wish for things to remain as the dream of a free-taking competition began to loom large.

These neutrals were granted their wish as referee Alan Kelly blew after both sides added one point to their half-time scores.

Cian Lynch proved the hero once again after a terrific display all throughout, winning a crucial last gasp free for the Shannonsiders.

The drama of the free-taking competition was a highly enjoyable affair, if just for the unusual spectacle it was.

Five frees each, this is a welcome development for the neutral, however a cruel way to lose for those involved.
