In a story of immense courage, this short documentary tells us the story of former Cork intermediate All-Ireland winner, Dessie Fitzgerald, who suffered a spinal cord injury while playing for his beloved club.
The 8th of October 2011 was a day that changed Dessie’s life forever. While playing a championship game for his club Charleville against Kilbrin, Fitzgerald suffered a shocking injury that would turn his life upside down.
Coupled with a revealing interview with www.gaa.ie, this video documents the struggles and obstacles, Fitzgerald has had to deal with, and more importantly, overcome.
Dessie got engaged to his now wife Sarah, before the injury struck. However, they decided to proceed with the wedding, but not without Desie trying his utmost to get to his feet for the big day.
Rehabilitation took over Fitzgerald’s life. Spending, on average, seven hours a day in Dún Laoghaire, Dessie went from physiotherapy, to occupational therapy, to the gym.
His hurling career has come to a standstill but he hasn’t let the injury determine his life.
“My whole outlook on it now has changed. To be completely honest, I look at the world completely differently since the accident. I look at people differently.
“If I could be part of helping younger people growing up and being happy with who they are as individuals I would love to do that for sure. If that could be in a GAA field, I would love it.”
A story of great courage and inspiration from Dessie Fitzgerald. Well done and we wish you well with whatever life holds for you.
