UL are Fitzgibbon Cup champions once again after a deserved win over DCU in Mallow today. The Limerick college were hot favourites for the decider, as they boasted a host of top intercounty players in their ranks.

However, the north Dublin side weren’t just going down to Cork to make up the numbers, and they took the lead in the first half thanks to a Patrick Curran penalty.

However, UL’s class began to tell as they reeled in their opposition, and a goal from Jason Forde in the 23rd minute sent them back into the lead.

Forde was played in by fellow Tipperary senior star John McGrath, with a delightful lobbed pass. Forde, perhaps the form hurling in Ireland right now, made no mistake as he rattled the net.

UL had enough in the tank to go on and win the tie, as it finished 2-21 to 2-15.
